Compatible Hardware for A449 Bolts
Nuts
The recommended nut grades for A449 are shown in the table below. The A563B nut recommended for smaller diameters is not readily available off the shelf and is commonly substituted for either A563A or A194-2H. The A449 specification allows for alternate nut grades as long as the proof load stresses are greater than the specified suitable nuts. Most commonly, A449 bolts are provided with A194-2H or A563-DH heavy hex nuts. These two nut grades are high strength and undergo a heat-treating process to develop their mechanical properties. The reason these two nut grades are primarily used with A449 is because they are the most readily available nut grades in the marketplace.

Washers
The recommended washer for A449 bolts is ASTM F436. This is a hardened washer that has undergone a heat-treating process. The F436 washers have a smaller outside diameter than typical flat washers.
